Diary BFF

A daily journal app for the end of the day

Most people looking for a daily journal app have tried one before. It went well for a week. Then one night got busy, the next night felt like catching up, and by the third the app had turned into one more thing to keep up with.

Diary BFF is a daily journal app built around a different idea: the page should be easy to open on any given night, and just as easy to leave alone. You write when there’s something to write. When there isn’t, nothing happens.

One page for tonight

You open the app and you’re on tonight’s page. There are no templates to pick, no mood to rate, no questions you have to answer first. Write the long version, the messy version, or one line. If you’d rather talk than type, you can hold to record and it turns into text on the same page.

There’s no sign-up before you start, and no profile to fill in.

Someone writes back, when you ask

A daily journal is usually a one-way thing. Diary BFF writes back. When you want a reply, you ask, and your diary BFF reads what you wrote and answers in a few sentences, with at most one question. No lists and no advice unless you ask for it. It doesn’t repeat back what you just said.

The replies aren’t written by a person. Your diary BFF is an AI that lives in your diary.

If you want to keep going, you can talk it through. What you wrote, the chat and the replies stay together on one page for that night.

Skip a night, and it won’t bring it up

This is the part that matters most for a daily habit that actually lasts. Your diary BFF doesn’t keep score. Miss a night, or a week, and the replies won’t mention it. Notifications never show what you wrote, because they can appear on a lock screen.

When you come back, it picks up where you are, not where you left off.

It remembers what you wrote, with the date

A journal you write in most days builds up. Your diary BFF remembers what you wrote, with the date. When it brings up something from an earlier night, it tells you which one, so you can see how far back a thought goes.

Once a week, on Sundays, it writes you a letter about your week: what kept coming up, what changed, the night that went better than expected.

Private by default

  • It has its own PIN, separate from your phone’s passcode, with no Face ID shortcut. Someone can be holding your unlocked phone and still not open your journal.
  • Your entries are not used to train AI.
  • Nothing is shared with other users. There’s no feed.

Who it’s for

  • People who want to write most nights, and don’t want an app that counts the ones they missed.
  • People whose day only slows down after everyone else has gone to bed.
  • Anyone who has kept a journal before and wished it would say something back.
