Terms of Use
Last updated: 2026-10-15
These terms are the agreement between you and us, the maker of Diary BFF (“Diary BFF”, “the app”, “we”, “us”). By using the app, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app.
We’ve tried to write this in plain words. It still matters, so please read it.
1. Who can use it
- You must be 13 or older. The app is not meant for anyone younger.
- If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian needs to agree to these terms and to any subscription with you.
- You are responsible for your account and for what happens on it.
- Your account is anonymous. There is no email or password we can send you. If you link Sign in with Apple, that is how you move the diary to a new phone.
2. Your PIN
The diary has its own PIN, separate from your phone’s lock. That is the point of it, and it also means:
- We can’t unlock the app for you, and we can’t skip or shorten the wait.
- If you forget your PIN, you can ask to reset it in the app. The diary then stays locked for 10 days before you can set a new one. Entering your PIN during that time cancels the request.
- Keep your PIN somewhere you can find it. If you lose both your PIN and access to your account, we may not be able to help you get back in.
3. Your diary and your data
- What you write is yours. We don’t claim ownership of it. You give us permission to store it, process it and send it to the services listed in our Privacy Policy, only so the app can work for you.
- We back up your diary and your photos every night. We don’t promise that nothing will ever be lost, or that we can restore something that was. Servers fail, and so do backups.
- You can export your diary, free, at any time — Settings → Export & Import. You can lock the file with a password. If your diary matters to you, keep an export of your own.
- Deleting your account deletes your data. Settings → Delete account. It happens right away and cannot be undone. Encrypted copies of photos in our backup are gone within 7 days.
- Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel that in iOS Settings.
- How we handle your data is in our Privacy Policy: diarybff.app/privacy.
4. The AI replies
- Replies in the app are written by an AI model run by a third party (currently Anthropic). They are not written by a person, and no person at Diary BFF reads your entries to write them.
- They are not medical, psychological, legal, financial or any other professional advice. The app is not therapy and is not a crisis service.
- Replies can be wrong, can misremember what you wrote, and can miss the point. Don’t rely on them for decisions about your health, safety, money or the law.
- If you are thinking about hurting yourself, or you are in danger, contact a crisis line or emergency services now. In the US and Canada, you can call or text 988. Elsewhere, call your local emergency number, or find a line near you at findahelpline.com. If a message on the chat page looks like a crisis, the app doesn’t send it to the AI and shows you a crisis line instead.
5. Free and paid
- Writing in the diary is free. A subscription buys more replies and the full Sunday letter.
- Subscriptions and any free trial are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. They renew automatically until you cancel in iOS Settings. Refunds are handled by Apple under its rules.
- What each plan includes, and its limits, can change. The app shows you where you stand.
6. Using it fairly
Please don’t:
- try to break, overload or get around the limits of the app or its servers;
- copy, resell or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows it;
- use the app to break the law or to harm someone.
We may suspend or close an account that does these things.
7. As is
The app is provided “as is” and “as available”. We work to keep it running and correct, but we don’t guarantee that it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or available at any particular time. To the extent the law allows, we make no other promises about it, written or implied.
8. Limit of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- Our total liability to you for anything to do with the app is limited to the greater of (a) what you paid for the app in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) CAD $50.
- We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, including lost data, lost profits or emotional distress.
Some places don’t allow these limits. If you live in one of them — for example Quebec, or the European Union — your local consumer protection law applies where it requires, and the limits in sections 7 and 8 apply only as far as that law allows. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under it.
9. Ending it
You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time. We may stop offering the app or close accounts that break these terms. If we stop offering the app, we’ll try to tell you in the app ahead of time so you can export your diary.
10. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we’ll update the date at the top and tell you in the app. Using the app after that means you accept the new terms.
11. Law and disputes
- These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
- If something goes wrong, write to us first at hello@diarybff.app, and let’s try to sort it out together. If we can’t within 30 days, either of us can take it to the courts of British Columbia — unless your local law gives you the right to go to your own courts.
12. Apple
You got the app from Apple’s App Store, so these terms also include the following, which Apple requires.
- Agreement. These terms are between you and us only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
- Licence. We give you a non-transferable licence to use the app on any Apple-branded product that you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. Family Sharing and other ways the Usage Rules allow are included.
- Support. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for maintenance and support of the app. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- Warranty. We are solely responsible for any product warranty, whether expressed or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for the app. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses caused by a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party about the app or your use of it, including (i) product liability claims; (ii) claims that the app fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (iii) claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- Intellectual property. If a third party claims that the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- Legal compliance. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Contact. Questions, complaints or claims about the app go to us: Ben Chao Chen, Vancouver, BC, Canada, hello@diarybff.app.
- Third-party terms. You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app (for example, your mobile data plan).
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept them, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
