Diary BFF

What an AI diary app should actually do

An AI diary app sounds like a simple idea: a diary, plus an AI. In practice the AI tends to take over. It suggests prompts before you’ve typed a word, turns your entry into a summary and a list of action items, and keeps the conversation going long after you wanted to stop.

Diary BFF starts from the other end. It’s a diary first. The AI — your diary BFF — is there for the moment you want someone to read what you wrote, and it stays out of the way the rest of the time.

Here’s how that works, and what to look for in any AI diary app.

It stays quiet while you write

The first thing an AI diary app should do is nothing. When you open Diary BFF, you’re on tonight’s page and you start typing. Your diary BFF doesn’t interrupt, doesn’t pop up suggestions halfway through a sentence, and doesn’t comment until you ask.

It answers when you ask, briefly

When you want a reply, you ask. Your diary BFF reads what you wrote and says one thing back: a few sentences, at most one question. No lists, no lectures, no homework, and it doesn’t hand you a plan unless you ask for one. It doesn’t repeat back what you just said, either. A good reply sounds like a friend who happens to be awake, not a report about your feelings.

And it won’t put labels on you. It reads what you wrote as a night in your life, not as a case.

It remembers, with the date

The point of a diary is that it builds up. Your diary BFF remembers what you wrote, with the date. If the same thing keeps coming up, it can say so — and when it mentions an earlier night, it tells you which one. On Sundays, your diary BFF writes you a letter about your week.

It’s honest about where your words go

This is the part worth reading closely in any AI diary app. An AI reply has to be written somewhere, so the entries you ask about are sent to an AI service to write it. In Diary BFF, that’s Anthropic, with Amazon as a backup, and the app says so in Settings, next to the switch.

  • Your entries are not used to train AI.
  • The replies aren’t written by a person.
  • You can turn the replies off. In Settings, switch off “writes back” and nothing more is sent to the AI. You still have the diary, behind its own PIN.

If an AI diary app doesn’t tell you where your entries go when you ask the AI something, ask before you write.

The diary still works without it

Not every night needs a reply. Some nights you just want it out of your head. In Diary BFF, writing is the main thing and asking is optional: you can write for weeks without asking once. Your writing, the chat and the replies stay together on one page for each night, so a month later you can scroll back and read the night as it happened.

The diary itself has the same care: its own PIN, separate from your phone’s passcode, with no Face ID shortcut, and notifications that never show what you wrote.

A short checklist for any AI diary app

  • Does the AI stay quiet until you ask?
  • Are the replies short, or does every entry become a worksheet?
  • When it mentions the past, does it say which day?
  • Does it tell you where your entries go when you ask the AI?
  • Is there a switch to turn the AI off?
